Julie Gee, SPHR, SHRM-SCP is currently the Human Resources Manager at Astronics LSI. She is a current BNHRA member and earned her SHRM-SCP certification in 2023. Congrats Julie! As the current Certification Director serving on the BNHRA Board of Directors, I wanted to talk to Julie about her certification journey and share it with other HR pros. One question I frequently get is, “I’m interested in getting certified. What’s the right way to go about it?” That is such a broad question because everyone’s experiences are different. You can check out my certification journey on my blog here. Read what Julie did and what worked for her! FULL ARTICLE HERE
At the BNHRA we believe that a professional HR certification is an important step in an HR career. Becoming certified demonstrates commitment to the profession, that you’re willing to take on a challenge to improve yourself no matter your experience level, and that you’ve established an understanding of Human Resources concepts and practices that set you apart. When a member achieves the certification that’s right for them, we believe it’s worth recognizing.
Below we’d like to recognize recently certified members. If you recently certified or expect to certify in the near future, we’d love to hear from you! Please reach out to [email protected]
HRCI Ethics Requirement
If you are certified with HRCI, as part of your 3-year recertification cycle you are now required to obtain 1 ethics credit. There is not a specific “ethics” designation to select from when entering the activity. Simply include one ethics-themed activity in your recertification plan and check the required “ethics affirmation box” to submit your recertification application. Check out this HRCI In The Know video that demonstrates how to add one ethics credit for recertification.
Take Your HR Certification Exam from Home
Both SHRM and HRCI are now offering remote proctoring – meaning you can now take your HR certification at home! Check out SHRM’s remote proctoring procedures here and HRCI’s procedures here.
Need Credits? Earn SHRM Recertification Credits for Your COVID-19 Contributions in the Workplace
Have you played a role in your organization’s response to COVID-19? SHRM certification holders can now earn all 60 PDCs for work surrounding COVID-19 within their organization. To take advantage of this opportunity:
- Summarize activities using this SHRM COVID-19 Response Summary Form and follow the instructions to redeem the credits.
- You must attend at least one chapter or state council COVID-19-specific program and document it on this summary form. Click here for a list of on demand SHRM chapter webinars related to this topic.
Carry Over Credit Allowance – SHRM & HRCI
Both SHRM and HRCI now allow professional development and recertification credits to carry over into the next 3-year recertification cycle. Make sure you are loading every single credit to your portals!
*SHRM will recognize up to 20 carry over credits – they will add them to your Advance Your Education category, which allows for an unlimited number for professional development credits per cycle.
*HRCI will recognize up to 15 carry over credits. No matter what they are when you earn them, they will carry over into your next cycle as general HR credits. Ready more detail on how to qualify credits with HRCI on their recently released FAQ page about carry over credits here.
The BNHRA understands that it can be an intimidating and confusing process when deciding from which professional organization you would like to pursue a certification with both SHRM and HRCI offering designations. Please review the information below to assist you in the decision-making process.
