College Relations

Student Mentorship Program

HR students get paired with working practitioners. Mentors get to shape the next person who'll be sitting in their chair someday. Everyone benefits from the conversation.

About the Program
A structured relationship between students and the profession they're entering.

BNHRA pairs undergraduate and graduate HR students with local HR professionals based on HR interests, location, and availability. The goal is straightforward: give students access to someone doing the job so they can learn things a classroom can't teach.

For mentors, it's a chance to invest in the field directly, and to connect with early-career talent.

What Students Get
A real-world HR perspective outside the curriculum
Guidance from someone already navigating the profession
Networking within the WNY HR community
Potential internship connections
How to Participate
Two roles.
Requirements are minimal by design to help facilitate the relationship itself.
For Students
Mentee

You're studying HR and want to know what the job actually looks like. A mentor gives you someone to ask the questions in addition to your professors, and a window into the WNY HR community before you're trying to break into it.

Requirements
Full-time student enrolled in an accredited degree program (BA/BS, MA/MS, or equivalent)
Degree program in HR or a directly related field (Industrial & Labor Relations, Org Development, Change Management, etc.)
BNHRA student membership
For HR Professionals
Mentor

At least one hour a month, you bring your experience; your mentee brings fresh questions that'll make you see your field from a fresh perspective.

Requirements
Minimum 1 hour per month for the academic year (more is always welcome)
Working in HR or a directly related field (OD, HR consulting, etc.)
BNHRA membership
Resources
The Mentoring Toolkit
Once you're matched, the toolkit walks both parties through the process: how to structure meetings, what to cover, and how to get the most out of the relationship.
