Kim Marino, Manager, Learning and Organizational Development at Independent Health

Research suggests up to 20% of new hires leave in the first 45 days of employment. Conversely 69% of employees say they are likely to stay with a company for at least three years after a great onboarding experience. Kim Marino will discuss the important elements of onboarding, who should be involved and when. She will share tools and resources to help ensure it is an effective and positive onboarding experience. Finally, she will discuss the need to evaluate and measure the program’s effectiveness and how to do this!

SHRM Certification Testing Update: The May 1 through July 15 testing window has been moved to June 1 through August 15, and may be pushed back further. SHRM is working with applicants directly to reschedule their testing appointments. Additionally, SHRM has announced that effective June 1, SHRM will offer a remote proctoring option which will facilitate testing from home. More details to come!

Labor and Employment Update - Reopening NYS (May 15, 2020)

The good news is that New York State will soon begin to reopen Empire State businesses, albeit by region and consistent with the federal government's "Opening Up America Again" phased approach.

While on PAUSE, New York State COVID-19 Executive Orders and regulatory guidelines have been issued on a weekly, if not daily, basis. Many sense that the "new normal" of telework, Zoom meetings and homeschooling will plague us for some period of time.

Government Affairs Updates

SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act

The SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act (SUPPORT Act) was signed into law to address the U.S. opioid crisis and takes steps to augment and enhance the nationwide system for preventing and treating opioid addiction.

The SUPPORT Act makes changes to a variety of public health and law enforcement policies. Here’s an overview of some of the health care-related policy changes included in the law.

· Medicaid Institutions for Mental Diseases (IMD) Exclusion: Amends the IMD exclusion to allow state Medicaid programs to receive federal reimbursement for covering certain IMD services up to a total of 30 days annually.
· Telehealth: Expands coverage of telehealth services under Medicare for the treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders beginning July 1, 2019. Also directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to issue guidance regarding federal reimbursement for telehealth services and treatment for substance use disorders under Medicaid.
