Immigration Law - Understanding your Hiring Obligations

HR professionals are often tasked with on-boarding a foreign national onto U.S. payroll or navigating the complicated world of visa sponsorship and permanent residence applications. These can be complex (and often, confusing) processes. To better understand your obligations as an HR professional/employer, this talk will shed light on the following areas:

    I-9 Compliance
o Immigration Documents 101 – learn about each type of immigration document and their individual functions
o Filling out the I-9 – important requirements for completing this document
o Penalties – the immigration and financial consequences of improperly completed I-9s

    Nonimmigrant Visa Categories
o Overview of permissible business visitor activities
o Popular categories seen by HR: H-1B, L-1, TN

    Permanent Residence Applications
o PERM Applications and testing the Labor Market
    o Multinational Manager applications -

    Considerations for HR
o Using E-Verify – what is this, and why should you use it?
o Immigration policies- keeping your promises to foreign nationals consistent

    Immigration in the Trump Era
o Answering the question everyone wants to know – “Will this Presidency affect my status in the U.S.?”

Approved for one recertification credit by SHRM and HRCI
